Wide Angle – Week 9

A week ago today I was up at Black Butte Ranch chilling out in a beautiful vacation home with zero plans for the weekend.  The first day we woke to a stunning, sunny, snowy wonderland (excuse the cell phone picture below).

I spent most of the weekend doing whatever which was SO nice.  I loved gazing out the wall of windows at this beautiful landscape.  The whole time I was cozy inside I kept looking at this big log.  If I clean off the snow I wonder if one of the dogs would stay there long enough for me to get a nice wide-angle portrait?  I cleared it off and waited for the sun to start going down.  Sadly I didn’t bring any lights so I couldn’t let it go down too far.

First up was Dexter (my friend’s dog).  He stood there so much longer than I thought.  Small dogs don’t have the height to keep their undercarriage out of the snow. Brrrr!  Yes, the composition and basic settings are necessary but the creative work happens in Photoshop. Take a look at this wide-angle image before and after my edits.

Next up was my boy Ollie.  I knew this was going to be difficult. He’s a bouncy little boy.  As you can see by the quantity of snow on him he had jumped off that log several times before I got the shot.

A wide-angle shot is the complete opposite of Filling the Frame, which is my go-to shot.

This is a blog circle so not is the time you move on to the next photographer to see what they have to say about wide-angle shots.
